Where did we end up?
Right before lunch at Ait Ben Haddou, we stopped through a shop and our guide told us we should buy scarves to put on our heads for the camel ride. He said they would give us a good price here because there is a group of us. Nicole and I were the only suckers to pay 120 dirham for a scarf. This is about $12. I guess we were excited by the scarf process and weren’t sure if we should wait...well I have seen these same scarves sold everywhere for as low as 20 dirham, or $2. Fools....
After losing money there, we were ushered into a restaurant nearby for lunch. I am sure it was an over priced tourist trap but we ate there anyway. Spending too much was just the theme of the day I guess! It was quite pretty as we have found most things here are. We sat with some other people in our group however none of them spoke English very well. Most of them were German and though we chatted for a little while, it seemed more of a struggle than was worth it.
We both got to try Tajine for the first time! This is the dish of Morocco and I think it has more to do with the pot it is cooked in than the actual seasonings. I had lamb and Nicole had chicken. We thought they were good at the time, however we have had more and more delicious tajine since then. The chicken one was too citrusy for my taste. Basically this is cooked in this pot with certain spices (I suspect Bebere seasoning) and some root vegetables (potato, carrot, squash, zucchini, and maybe tomatoes and peas) and it turns out amazingly yummy.
After lunch we drove and drove some more, maybe 4 more hours with only one quick break to look around for 15 minutes. We were driving through a small town, more residential area. I was thinking that it was odd that all the kids were out and about yet seemed to stop and look as we drove through. I imagined they would see a lot of tourists vans along our route. However then our van driver pulled over and stopped and said “ok 12 stay here, 6 stay somewhere else”.
Pretty much everyone on the bus had the same level of confusion. The driver called out 3 names and mine was one of them so we were part of the 6 going to a different place. Nicole whispered to me “divide and conquer” so yes, we were a bit nervous. Honestly, I think everyone was. But! We grabbed our bags and followed a random man down the block to a different hotel called Le Jammou. It was very nice inside though a bit cold. They served us mint tea while we filled out paperwork. We connected to WiFi here but it was so bad which is why I was unable to upload pictures.
What else was bad about Le Jammou? Well, there was no heat. Nicole had the brilliant idea of taking showers first so we would have the most hot water. It was scorching hot with no water pressure so definitely did not compare with our hostel showers! It was good enough though and it was nice to go down to dinner feeling refreshed.
