Dinner at Taverna Glafkos - Nauosa, Paros
I love vacation because I love a midday shower before getting dressed up for dinner. Last night for dinner in Paros, actually ended up being our last dinner in Greece.
While checking my email around 6pm on Monday, I see that our ferry, scheduled for 10:45am (moved from 1pm to 10:45 already) has been cancelled. That’s it. The email just says sorry cancelled and we will refund you. No other options. (Later I have found that to get the refund, the tickets have to be mailed with a copy of the email to their office in Greece. Sounds like it’s easier to dispute on my cc...)
So we scramble to find another ferry. There was a really early one or a really late one. In retrospect, earlier probably would have been better, but we booked the 7:15pm ferry because I think we really didn’t want to leave the island.
But on to dinner after the drama. Walking around Nauosa trying to find the right place, looking up reviews, sizing up menus, finally we both have to use a WC so we have to make a decision. We find a lovely water front restaurant Taverna Glafkos.
Water, wine, WC, and then we order.
Grilled Haloumi Cheese with prosciutto and dried figs...yes please! This cheese was amazing. Grilled cheese evokes images of a sandwich but I am now obsessed with the easiest fancy dish ever.
Then the main course. I knew it was a mistake before I did it. I’ve ordered shrimp in Europe before. I knew what would happen. But I did it anyway.
I couldn’t even have the dish in front of me, I pushed it away. It’s not the eyes, or the feet, or the whiskers that really get me. It was the smell. It’s not bad, just that I am very sensitive to a fish smell. Nope, no way, no thanks. I even tried one (after declawing it) but it tastes like it smells which is like fishy soap. Adam seemed to enjoy the shrimp so we switched entrees. The ones that came with his pasta, looked nicer to me, still not my favorite ever, they were a little bitter for some reason.
The nice part about dinner was the older couple next to us, Lois and Mike, retired teachers from Canada who have been coming to Paros for 20 years. They love the island and told us how much it has changed even in the past two years with increased tourists and business. It was a nice little chat about travel.
The best part of the night? Ice Cream! I had been waiting to go back to the place that said Homemade in the window. It was pretty late already and some shops were closing down but there it was Nonna Crema! Homemade ice cream!
The ice cream man was so nice. There were only about 12 flavors and he insisted we try a bunch of them right away. In a minute I had 6 little spoons in my hand, all of them yummy. I decided on Raspberry and Ricotta Fig in a beautiful homemade cone. We sat outside, I took a few licks, and splat—ice cream down! The cone broke!
Luckily the nice ice cream man was right there and he said don’t worry my dear! He came over, scooped up my ice cream, showed me to the bathroom to wash my hands, and got me a new delicious cone. Happy happy yummy yummy. 😊
Dinner at Taverna Glafkos was good but I think what made it nice was the ambiance. The ice cream was amazing and we found better food at other Paros restaurants which I wrote about in the other posts.
