Last Day in Budapest
Since we left the spa faster than expected, we had time to stop at the apartment and drop off the bags we had brought to the spa. At this point, it had been almost four hours since breakfast so of course Johnny was absolutely starving. I had about 30 seconds from him asking where we will go to eat to when he announced that he needed to eat right away and suggested he would go downstairs to find a “schnack” before we leave to go to lunch. I had to insist it would only take 5 minutes to look up a restaurant since I already had a list but it’s very hard to concentrate under all of the pressure.
We decided on a place close to the Parliament but unfortunately when we got there it was booked so we had to go to the next closest restaurant to avoid a meltdown. Luckily the place we found had really good pizza, and the goulash I had was pretty spectacular as well. We truly have not had a bad meal here!
Aunt Mare had mentioned she wanted to try a Turkish coffee and I saw a Turkish restaurant nearby so we stopped in for a quick coffee and dessert. (If you are thinking at this point, “how do you keep eating?” Yes, I’m with you, it’s nonstop food) The Turkish coffee was not my favorite because it didn’t come with a Turkish delight but the baclava was delish and rice pudding was truly the best rice pudding i have ever had.
Now, we can’t go anywhere without causing a scene, after all, we are the Dunkin Family walking around in bright orange hats. So naturally Johnny had to ask our non-English speaking waiter if he could buy or steal the spoon he was using for his cappuccino because he loved it so much. The uncomfortable looks and apologies that ensued were horrifying, but Johnny got his spoon for $3 and we left with looks of shame and laughter.
3pm parliament tour was a highlight for papa, the parliament building is super impressive and lots of history. But for me, an audio guide is a snooze fest and I literally fell asleep standing up twice during the 45 min tour. I love history but listening to a British voice talk about names I can’t understand is not for me.
Thankfully we had nap time upon arriving back at the apartment. A 30 minute snooze really revived me. We decided to head back out to the Christmas markets to get some treasures and there was a beautiful light show happening on the facade of the church. That and the Christmas music and getting to walk by myself for 5 minutes put me in a happy place. (I got to walk by myself because as we arrived at the market, everyone was looking for more food and I really had to tap out there.)
I did however grab some mulled wine (the white one was absolutely gross, stick to red) and found the family while they ate. Alyssa had gone to get her own food and hadn’t returned and they were getting worried that she had been trafficked. Once we found her again, we shared a chimney cake to end the evening.
