Hi!

Thanks for visiting my website! I hope you find some useful travel tips, yummy restaurants to check out, or are at least amused and entertained by a few good stories.

Wine Day

Wine Day

We woke Sunday morning to Rebecca yelling out “one got in”!

We didn’t have to ask what it was. Our fear come true, one of the gigantic cicada like beetles was in the house. This is the true story of 3 girls from the city trying to kill a country bug.

It seemed to not be able to fly, we threw two towels and a rug over it and then a book on top that Bella stomped on hoping to have killed it. We won’t check. It will stay that way until we leave.

Coffee making time, then down by the water to relax and enjoy. The views here are incredible, but so are the size of these beetles.

I could not relax as the beetles sound like they are circling us and keep flying so close and they are so large. I ended up going out into the water a bit and sitting on a rock where it seemed they did not want to reach me. I did see a small crab out there, but definitely prefer that to the beetles.

But enough about bugs, it’s wine day!

We arranged for Robi, who owns a travel and tour company, to take us to 3 local wineries. They are only about 15 minutes from here but up and down some hills, definitely not possible to walk there.

We cooked up some scrambled eggs, pork, and tomatoes for breakfast and then got ready for wine tasting.

Robi dropped us off at Milos Winery at 2:30. We had a tour and tasting there, and it was surprisingly very modern and professional. They seem to be considered a big wine producer for Croatia. Most Croatian wines are consumed in the country as other countries don’t really know about Croatian grapes.

The beautiful terrace was so relaxing and mostly bug free, we could have sat there all day. We ate some cheese, bought olive oil and wine, and then had to walk to the next winery.

Unfortunately the walk was along a main road and a bit uphill but it was absolutely gorgeous.

Our next stop was Marlais Winery which had the most professional website but was the smallest stop.

We chose a 3 wine tasting and the man hosting us was the owner. They also gave us bread and olive oil. We were kind of offended by the bad bread, it was basically like wonder bread. We only spent an hour there before walking over to our next stop.

Final winery: Vukas.

Oddly enough, I had been here when I visited Croatia last time.

On our walk over, we passed a cherry tree and as we commented on it, we saw an old man on a ladder in the tree. He waved to us and gestured if we wanted some. Of course we said yes. So we stood below the tree trying to catch the cherries that he was throwing down to us. We can’t catch, but the cherries were amazing! It was the type of special moment that doesn’t happen when you only visit major touristy cities.

Vukas was definitely our favorite. The owner was our host, he was super knowledgeable and kind, we tasted the most wines for the least money, and we ended up buying a bunch of wine too.

He started us with his homemade cordials which were actually super tasty!

We all ended up purchasing a small cordial bottle at the end. I liked the sour pomegranate the best, Rebecca liked cherry, and Bella liked rose.

We tried 6 wines, and we were quite impressed by all of them. We ended up taking home a sparkling rosé, a white wine, and a red for our dinner tonight. (Side note, we ended up drinking all three. One before dinner by the water, one during dinner to pair with our food, and one after dinner because we were dumb and already drunk.)

The dinner plan was to make a light meat sauce with gnocchi. But first we played cribbage by the water and enjoyed the beautiful sunset on our pretty property.

We cooked up another amazing meal in our tiny kitchen, drank way too much, and sang songs and danced and laughed just like we do on Sundays at home. Basically we paid to spend a week in another country doing the same things we do at home.
