From Luzern to Gimmelwald
Somehow survived the night and woke slowly. I was about 50% alive but we had to pack up and get to a cruise on Lake Luzern.
Wow, a boat after food poisoning? Yes. Must keep going. We had booked a breakfast on the round trip cruise which went from 9:30-12. On the way there we stopped for a Powerade and truly that was life giving. The breakfast was simple and I managed to eat just a few bites of the croissant. The boat ride was beautiful but I did sleep through a bit of it.
Post boat, we had to hustle back to our hotel, grab our bags and hustle back to the train station.
Not too much to say about the travel. We took a train from Luzern to Meirignen. A bus from there to Interlaken. Another train from Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen. Then a gondola from Lauterbrunnen up to Gimmelwald.
But Gimmelwald is beautiful. And gondola is not my favorite method of transportation.
We have a much smaller than expected tiny attic room at Esther’s Guesthouse in this tiny little town only reachable by gondola. We laughed quite a bit upon realizing this was our little room for 4 nights.
Random thought: the water pressure in Switzerland has been surprisingly strong. All showers and faucets have quite a stream.
After checking in, we ventured out to dinner in Murren which is a 4 minute (and $7pp) gondola ride up. I haven’t eaten now for about 24 hours and had a sudden craving for Chinese food. Turns out there was a place nearby. Murren was supposedly more populated than Gimmelwald but this is one of the bummers of off-season travel…almost all of the restaurants, including the Chinese place, were closed. Only two places were open so we popped into one recommended by Rick Steves. We were so hungry but also no cheese please.
We had a tomato soup, a bone broth soup, a salad, veggies with rice, and french fries with a glass of wine each…just over $100. Insane.
I will say, all the food was excellent but gosh so so expensive.
Tomorrow is our big hiking day so we needed some good rest in our attic.
