After a beautiful dinner, we were so so tired from days of not enough sleep. Although we had two roommates I never actually saw either of them. Got into bed around 11pm, both roomies were already asleep. Due to French air conditioning being barely efficient, the windows to the room were open to let in the cool air.
Bzzzzzz, I woke to a bug buzzing in my ear but turned over and went back to sleep. Bzzzz, maybe 20 mins later it’s back in my ear. I tossed and turned again. It kept coming back to my ear. It’s about 4am now, I put my pillow over my head, still can hear it. I open the curtain to my bed, hoping it would fly away. I got up, went to the bathroom, shook out my pillow.
Got back into bed, it come back. I hear Rebecca tossing and turning above me too. Then, I trapped myself under my blankets, truly could not breathe under there and can’t fall back asleep because I hear the buzzing.
Finally I decide to get up around 5am and take my pillow and blanket outside to our little rooftop terrace and try to sleep out there. When I got outside, it was cool but actually very nice to be under the blankets. I look at my phone and Rebecca texted me that she also was suffering from no sleep due to buzzing bugs.
Around 7am, Rebecca got up and found me outside. She said she didn’t sleep, I didn’t sleep. I was horribly cranky due to no sleep. I went back in to the room and we looked around and found probably 12 mosquitos on the ceiling and two dead ones in my bed which I must have killed. I got in the shower and told Rebecca we need to find another place to stay for our last night. No way we’re we sleeping in this mosquito place when we both have to be at work on Wednesday and have slept less than 6 hours every night.
Quickly booked a hotel with two beds on booking .com and packed all of our stuff with the intention of coming back later and moving.
When we did finally check out, the girl at the desk was very nice. She asked why we were leaving early, we explained about the mosquitos which we showed her our bites (Rebecca: look at this one on my lip!) and she gave us the managers email address.
Our new room is no frills but the Hotel Des Arenes got the job done. We slept 8 hours straight and the air conditioner (mostly) worked.
