Dinner at Maison du Grec and By the Glass Wine Bar
I think the worst part of traveling is when you get hungry and have to walk around trying to find a place to eat. Luckily, Rick Steves guide book helps with this if I look something up ahead of time but sometimes, you have to venture outside of the guide book.
Maison du Grec was in a lively neighborhood and, like every other restaurant, has outdoor patio seating. We took a look at the menu, Adam was sold but I hesitated. I’m glad we decided to go for it. The food was quite good! We always take a while to order...I’m an adventurous eater and I like to have “traditional” food. Adam is more of a pasta, potato, and meat kind of guy.
Small Antipasti Plate - actually was meats and breadsticks with honey! Mortadella, bologna, some sort of jamon, and pastrami. We though it was adventurous to order antipasti wth no description but it turns out this was just our style!
Second course: Minced Beef Peinirli. What is peinirli? I didn’t know either, but the server said it’s like a Greek pizza. It was quite good! Very doughy with beef and grit err cheese and a fried egg. Sort of heavy but definitely worth it! The salad was actually good as well-the dressing tasted like a honey vinaigrette.
Third Course: Pork Belly! This is not an adventure course, I love me some pork belly. It came with fried potatoes and artichoke purée topped with a sweet red wine sauce. I’m not a potato wedge fan (too much potato taste) but Adam enjoyed them. He handled the potatoes and I handled the artichoke purée. So good, I have to learn how to make that. Although it did taste buttery so I’m not sure if it’s actually healthy? The pork belly certainly wasn’t healthy but it sure was good! When is pork not good? 😍
After dinner we walked up to a wine bar which had a nice selection but especially had some interesting Greek wines. They offered half glass tastings so we had 3 whites and then 3 reds. We tasted and then tested each other. It was wine geeky fun.
Finished off with a Greek dessert wine back at the hostel before sleeping way longer than expected!
